Woman feeling reassured after learning more about her pregnancy during an ultrasound appointment.

If you are pregnant and preparing for your first ultrasound, you may feel a little nervous about the procedure. Ultrasounds are safe, non-invasive, and should be the protocol for every pregnancy. Understanding how they work can help relieve worry and help you feel more confident and prepared for your appointment.

To schedule a free and confidential obstetric ultrasound, reach out to Bella Women’s Center.

How it Works

An ultrasound uses high‑frequency sound waves (not radiation) to create real‑time images of what’s happening inside your body. A trained medical professional moves a small handheld device called a transducer across your abdomen, or in early pregnancy, may use a small internal probe.

As the device sends sound waves into the body, those waves bounce off tissues, organs, and the developing pregnancy. A computer then translates the returning echoes into the images you see on the screen.

What You Can Expect During the Appointment

When you come in, the technician will put a warm, water-based gel on your abdomen. It might feel slightly cool or slippery, but it is completely harmless. It helps the transducer move easily and pick up a clear picture. From there, you will be able to see your uterus and the developing fetus on screen.

Throughout the scan, the technician may pause to take measurements that help determine gestational age and assess early development.

Why Ultrasound Matters Early in Pregnancy

Early ultrasounds provide insight into how the pregnancy is developing. One of their most important roles is confirming the pregnancy is located in the uterus, helping rule out an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies occur when a pregnancy implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube, and cannot progress normally. If not identified early, they can become medically serious.

An ultrasound can also give an estimate of gestational age, which can shape your medical options and help you understand your timeline.

Additionally, an ultrasound can help confirm whether the pregnancy is viable by detecting a heartbeat and flag early signs of miscarriage.
