Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when used correctly, but results can sometimes be inaccurate due to timing and other factors. They also have their limitations because they cannot provide the detailed information an ultrasound can.
Bella Women’s Center provides free self-administered pregnancy tests. If your test is positive, we offer a free 2D ultrasound with our trained medical professionals. We are here to help you get the pregnancy details you need to move forward.

Why Timing Is Important
Home pregnancy tests work by using urine to detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin, also known as hCG. This hormone begins to increase after the fertilized egg has implanted in the uterus, usually around 6-10 days after conception.
Timing matters when taking your pregnancy test. If you take a pregnancy test too early, hCG levels may not have risen enough to be detectable, which can result in a false negative.
The most accurate time to take a pregnancy test is one day after a missed period and with first morning urine, since this is when hCG is most concentrated.
What Can Affect the Accuracy of a Home Pregnancy Test
Although home pregnancy tests are generally accurate, there are some factors that can increase your chances of getting a false negative, such as:
- Taking the test too soon
- Reading the test too early
- Taking the test with diluted urine
- Using expired or damaged tests
In rare cases, you can get a false positive due to a recent pregnancy, miscarriage, or certain fertility medications.
Why an Ultrasound Matters
Home pregnancy tests can detect hCG, but don’t give you the full picture of how your pregnancy is progressing. An ultrasound is important as it confirms the location of the pregnancy, how far along you are, and the viability (if there is a heartbeat).
Knowing the location of your pregnancy rules out the chance that you are having an ectopic pregnancy. This is a condition where the pregnancy grows outside of the uterus and needs urgent medical attention.
An ectopic pregnancy can give you the same early pregnancy symptoms as a viable pregnancy; therefore, an ultrasound is the only way to tell if you could be having one.
