Your Second-Trimester Options
As you consider your options, having accurate and adequate information to make an informed decision is essential. We’re here to provide the facts you need to learn about your options.
Abortion
The FDA approves medical abortion (the abortion pill) only through 10 weeks of pregnancy. If your pregnancy is beyond that time frame, surgical abortion is an option in some states. The type of surgical abortion you may qualify for depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy.
For a second-trimester abortion, the most commonly used surgical abortion procedure is a D&E (dilation and evacuation.) Second-trimester abortion procedures come with increased costs and significant risks and potential side effects. It’s crucial to fully understand the risks and consequences of each option before making your decision.
Some of the potential side effects of a surgical abortion include mild cramping and light spotting, which can last for a few days. The risks include uterine perforation (when a surgical instrument pokes a hole in the uterus), damage to the cervix, scar tissue on the wall of the uterus, and infection.
Adoption
Adoption may seem like a complicated process, but it has greatly evolved over the years, giving birth mothers more control over the future of their child. You can choose from three types of adoption plans:
- Open adoption: You can select the family who will adopt your baby and maintain communication with them. You also have the flexibility to decide how involved you want to be in the child’s life.
- Semi-open adoption: While you can still have contact with the baby, a professional adoption agency will manage communication between you, the baby, and the adoptive family, limiting identifying information.
- Closed adoption: In a closed adoption, you will not have any contact with the baby, and all parties’ identities are kept confidential, with the court sealing adoption records.
Parenting
If you are considering parenting but are unsure if you’re ready, it’s completely normal to have doubts and questions. Parenting is a big life change, but it can also come with big rewards.. You may be asking yourself:
- What if I don’t have a partner?
- How will I support myself financially?
- Do I have a network to help me emotionally?
- What will my parents think?
- Can I still pursue my goals while parenting?
- What about the cost of childcare?
These questions are important to address, but keep in mind that many women have had the same initial doubts and questions, but have gone on to successfully parent their children. You don’t have to have perfect answers for all of these questions. Remember, you are stronger than you think, and there are free resources and support available to help you navigate this journey.
