If you’ve just recently learned your partner is pregnant, and it was unplanned, you may be going through a whirlwind of emotions. However, your partner is likely experiencing the same thing.
One of the biggest things you can do in this situation is be a rock for them while they go through the physical and emotional changes. Here are a few things you can do to support your partner during this critical time.
Listening and Opening a Dialogue
It may seem little, but just being there to listen to your partner can be an excellent way for your partner to relieve emotional stress and feel heard.
Try to practice active listening. This means truly hearing what your partner is saying, not just waiting for your turn to speak. Acknowledge her feelings, repeat back what you’ve heard to ensure understanding, and show empathy.
After that, begin with a conversation to discuss fears and hopes openly and honestly. This can be a challenging time, and clear, compassionate communication is key to addressing your partner’s concerns. Try to express your own feelings without judgment.
Get Educated
Your partner is going through a lot, so educating yourself will take that burden off their shoulders.
Learn about all options available, including parenting, adoption, and abortion. Understanding the implications, challenges, and resources for each option can help both of you make an informed decision.
As you research, share this information with your partner. Be prepared to discuss what you’ve learned and explore any questions or concerns your partner might have.
Play an Active Role
An unplanned pregnancy can be emotionally taxing. Be there for your partner, offering support and understanding. This might include attending medical appointments, running errands for them, or simply being a comforting presence.
